Q: What is a root canal? Do they hurt?

A: Surprisingly enough the root canal procedure itself is often painless!

Pain most often arises due to an infection (abcess) rather than the procedure itself.

A root canal is the treatment that is required when the nerve of the tooth dies and/or becomes infected due to tooth decay or trauma. A root canal is accomplished by first anesthetizing the tooth, making a small access into the tooth, and removing the nerve tissue inside the tooth. Then, the interior of the tooth is cleaned and shaped in order to seal the canals where the nerves once were.

Antibiotics are usually required in conjunction with the root canal therapy. A crown is often needed after a root canal, especially on the posterior or "jaw" teeth.

Q: Bleaching - Is it for me? Is it safe?

A: Tooth bleaching has become a very popular way to brighten your smile.

Bleaching is a very safe, neutral gel placed in trays fabricated from models of your teeth. These trays are placed in your mouth before bedtime and removed in the morning. Some people may experience mild sensitivity that goes away after finishing a night's bleaching.

It is wise to note that bleaching will not change the color of existing restorations and crowns. These can be changed, though, after whitening is accomplished to match your new, whiter smile.

Q: At what age should I bring my child to the dentist?

A: I recommend a child's first checkup to be around 3 to 4 years old.

It is important to expose children to the dental chair early in life to form a positive image of both the dentist and the dental office. By doing this early in life, it will instill good oral hygiene habits and keep their teeth healthy for life.

There are far fewer cavities in children these days. But, there also have been some recurrence of child cavities among the "bottled water" generation. Most bottled water does not contain fluoride, which is necessary for healthy teeth. Also, dried fruit snacks and "gummy" candies promote tooth decay. Start your child's dental hygiene habits early for a long-lasting, healthy smile.

Q: What is the difference between tooth colored fillings and silver fillings?

A: Silver fillings have been in use for many years. They are still a functional part of dental restoration. However, some people desire a more esthetic result. The cosmetic alternative to silver fillings is in the form of tooth colored resin fillings.

Q: How often should I change my toothbrush? Should I use a "hard" or "soft" toothbrush?

A: A soft or extra-soft toothbrush is highly recommended. Medium or hard toothbrushes damage the teeth and gums and are, therefore, not recommended.

Most toothbrushes will last 2-3 months with normal, twice daily use. Oral-B® makes a great toothbrush with an indicator stripe to let you know when you should change it. If your toothbrush bristles start to curl........it is definitely time for a new brush.

Q: What is a crown and why would I need one?

A: Crowns or caps are needed when a tooth breaks or fractures, after root canals, or for cosmetic reasons.

The tooth is shaped - then, an impression is made of that tooth, which is sent to a lab to be used to fabricate the crown. Meanwhile, a provisional crown - a "temporary crown" - is made for you. The new crown is usually cemented in 2-3 weeks.

Q: Implants or a Bridge? Which is right for me?

A: Implants are a very popular and successful part of dental treatment today. I am proud to say I have had extensive training on implants and have placed many implants with an extremely high success rate!!!

Although, an equally viable option for replacing a missing tooth is what is commonly called a "bridge." Depending on your particular situation, either of these may be the right choice for you.

I will - as part of my 5-Star Goal - always explain your options, communicate, and provide you with a complimentary consultation to provide you with all the information necessary to make the right decision.
